A CHEOPS white dwarf transit search

چکیده
White dwarf spectroscopy shows that nearly half of white atmospheres contain metals must have been accreted from planetary material survived the red giant phases stellar evolution. Ground based radial velocity (RV) searches continue to discover exoplanets below Neptune mass down to Earth mass. Furthermore, ground based transit searches now reach milli-mag photometric precision and can discover Neptune size planets around bright stars. These searches will find exoplanets around bright stars anywhere on the sky, their discoveries representing prime science targets for furth...
متن کاملSearch for Oxygen in Cool Dq White Dwarf Atmospheres
The existence of carbon in cool He white dwarf (WD) atmospheres has been known for a relatively long time[5]. The presence of carbon in these atmospheres is explained by convective dredge up of interior carbon [6]. Pelletier et al. (1986) presented the first detailed calculations of this process and showed that carbon diffuses upwards from the core into the base of the He-rich envelope where it...
متن کاملA Possible Brown Dwarf Companion to the White Dwarf Gd1400
An unresolved, likely L dwarf companion to the DA white dwarf GD1400 is reported. This would be only the second such system known, discovered 17 years after the prototype L dwarf, GD165B, was determined to be a companion to a white dwarf. Photometric observations and model predicted stellar parameters of the well studied white dwarf primary indicate that GD1400B has J−K & 2.0 and MK = 12.13 mag...
متن کاملPHL 5038 : A spatially resolved white dwarf + brown dwarf binary
A near-infrared excess is detected at the white dwarf PHL 5038 in UKIDSS photometry, consistent with the presence of a cool, substellar companion. We have obtained Hand K-grism spectra and images of PHL 5038 using NIRI on Gemini North. The target is spatially and spectrally resolved into two components; an 8000 K DA white dwarf, and a likely L8 brown dwarf companion, separated by 0.94 ′′. The s...
متن کاملA deeper understanding of white dwarf interiors
A detailed record of the physical processes that operate during post-main-sequence evolution is contained in the internal chemical structure of white dwarfs. Global pulsations allow us to probe the stellar interior through asteroseismology, revealing the signatures of prior nuclear burning, mixing, and diffusion in these stars. I review the rapid evolution of structural models for helium-atmosp...
